What's the difference between getting a chimney cap that's made of copper, as opposed to a chimney cap that's made of stainless steel? Is it just aesthetics? I'm sure there's a cost difference, too.
I recently inspected my existing chimney cap, which is as old as my 17-year-old house, and it looks like it's pretty well shot. I don't think it will last through another Northeast winter!
Would a black galvanized chimney cap tend to last longer than a regular stainless steel chimney cap? I'm looking for a chimney cap that is durable, yet won't cost an arm and a leg. I don't need any bells and whistles, either -- I mostly need a chimney cap that will keep out rain, snow, leaves, birds, and animals. (There's a lot of wildlife in my area.)
F.Y.I.: I have a 12-inch square masonry flue; and it's covered by what appears to be a rapidly deteriorating stainless steel chimney cap.
